8 Days / 7 Nights — Riga Self Drive Round Trip
Latvia doesn't get the attention it deserves, and that's exactly what makes it so good. This 8-day self-drive takes you right through the heart of the country — from the art nouveau streets of Riga to medieval castle ruins in Sigulda and Cēsis, through ancient forests, and all the way out to the wild Baltic Coast. You're behind the wheel the whole way, so you stop when you want, linger where you like, and take the back roads if the mood takes you.
The route is a genuine mix. The Gauja River Valley gives you green river gorges, castle mounds, and some of the best hiking in the Baltics. Then the landscape opens up as you head west toward Kuldīga — a quiet old town with a famous waterfall that runs the full width of the river — and on to the port city of Liepāja, with its long sandy beaches and raw, characterful history. Before looping back to Riga, you spend a night at Jūrmala, the beloved Baltic spa resort just outside the capital, and stop to explore the grand baroque Rundāle Palace, Latvia's most impressive stately home.
Around 528 mi (850 km) in total, the driving is easy and well spread across the week. You start and finish at Riga International Airport, spend three nights in the capital to really get under its skin, and pick up the rest of the country at a relaxed pace. This is a trip that suits curious, independent travellers who want to see a real, unhurried side of northern Europe — far from the crowds, full of surprises.
